Why are there no salary ranges on jobs?
Surely a job is about making a living.
I think about 90% of the jobs I’ve looked at recently haven’t had any salary ranges. Not even a ball park figure of how much money I will get in exchange for my time.
‘Competitive rates' and ‘salary dependent on experience’ are not suitable substitutes for real hard concrete numbers.
Now I don’t know about you, but I scroll past them in favour of jobs that do have numbers in them. And preferably a currency symbol.
Why?
I’m a straightforward person, and I like to know whether I’m moving up on the pay scale.
If I leave my comfortable 45k a year 9 to 5 job for a 35k job, it better have some crazy perks like unlimited paid time off.
I also like to save time, so I know I’m not applying for a job where my skills are being valued at below market rates.
So if you’re an unknown brand or agency looking to hire and you want to attract new talent, please be transparent with how much you’re going to pay.
It saves both of us time and the awkward conversation that follows ‘what are your salary expectations?’
